The Griffonia simplicifolia is a woody climbing shrub that reaches about 3 meters, from the countries of West Africa (mainly Ghana, Ivory Coast and Togo). Traditionally seeds have the reputation of awakening sexual appetite (aphrodisiac) among other properties. The leaves of this plant are also traditionally used to improve health. In the West, however, Bush also drew attention because the seeds are rich in 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan), which quickly reaches the brain where turns into serotonin in the body. The use of 5-HTP (in the form of Griffonia simplicifolia) instead of tryptophan omit step that limits the speed in the formation of serotonin: the conversion of L-tryptophan in 5-HTP. In addition the Griffonia 5-HTP is well absorbed: after swallowing approximately 70% reaches the blood circulation. The absorption of 5-HTP from the intestine is not slowed down by other amino acids. Therefore not necessary take 5-HTP outside meals, as it is the case for tryptophan. Unlike tryptophan, 5-HTP is used exclusively for the synthesis of serotonin. You cannot use for the production of proteins or nor converted to kynurenine and vitamin B3. Unlike the L-tryptophan, 5-HTP nor needs a conveyor molecule to cross the blood-brain barrier, so there is competition with other amino acids. Why 5-HTP does not seem to have problems getting to the brain, where he rapidly becomes serotonin. For these reasons the 5-HTP (under the form of Griffonia) is much more effective than the L-tryptophan and required much smaller (up to 10 times smaller) dosages.
