5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is an amino acid that is the intermediate step between tryptophan and the chemical serotonin in the brain.
Serotonin is involved in mood, behavior, appetite, and sleep and found in many places in the body, particularly the brain, gastrointestinal system, and blood cells. There is an enormous amount of evidence suggesting that low levels of serotonin are a common consequence of modern life. Stressful lifestyle practices and the diet of many people who live in this stress lead to low levels of serotonin in the brain. As a result, many people are overweight, crave sugar and other carbohydrates, experienced episodes of depression, frequent headaches and have muscle aches.
