The mapurito or anamú (Petiveria alliacea) is a plant that is in all of South America, very especially in the West Indies. It is native to the American tropics, although it can be found in other tropical areas and in Africa. He is called sometimes Garlic herb, plant, and especially the root, has a strong garlic-like odor. The root has anesthetic and analgesic properties and is considered more powerful than the leaves. In Cuba a decoction of the entire plant is used in cases of cancer and diabetes. It is also used as anti-inflammatory. Biologically active compounds numerous have been discovered in the anamu. Among these: flavonoids, triterpenes, steroids and -based sulfur compounds. In several studies it has demonstrated antitumor properties. It contains Benzaldehydo and Coumarin, and both have been documented with antitumororales and/or anticancerigenas properties. Research shows anti-leukemia, antitumor and cytotoxic effects towards various types of cancer cells. In a study published in 1993 showed immunostimulatory properties. Studies published between 1997 and 2001 confirm these properties. Studies carried out in Sweden show that the anamú has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties similar to new medicines against arthritis.
